Hey folks,

Just a note to let you know that tomorrow's meeting has been canceled due to most people being sick or having scheduling conflicts. We haven't had anyone RSVP "yes," so we are going to go ahead and call off the meeting. March 28th ICAN Meeting

Greetings,

Please join us for our upcoming ICAN meeting in South Charlotte on the 28th at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Angela's home in the Ballantyne area. Please let me know if you need her address/directions. In any case, RSVP so that we have a rough idea of how many people are planning to attend.

This month's meeting should be exciting and crucial. Angela was able to get maternity care stats for the entire state of NC and we are in collaboration with NCFOM in creating an e-book with interpretation of those stats from major figures in the birth community. Our rough release date is set at May 1st. Please come and give us your input for the book. This is also a great meeting for pregnant women to attend if they are wondering where the best places might be for VBAC, to prevent the first cesarean, etc.

In addition, it seems that we are in the midst of a situation where good care in the Charlotte area is becoming more and more scarce. Come and talk with us about what we can do to improve and change this situation. We are at a crossroads and it is so incredibly important that we pull together during this time to make things happen.

We understand that this Saturday is busy for many people, but if you can come, even if it's only for part of the meeting, your input on the above issues would be so appreciated.

Greetings Everyone,

I am sorry for the last minute cancellation, but Angela called me and she and her son have come down with a cold this morning. Given that the meeting was supposed to be at her home and we don't have time to move it, we are going to have to cancel this month's meeting. I am *so* sorry for the inconvenience, but I figured that nobody would want to be sick for a week after going to the ICAN Meeting, so I am trying to be respectful of everyone's health.

In addition, only two people RSVP'd yes, and one of those families has a son with the croup. The other person, I do not have a phone number for. Anyhow, if you were planning to attend today and I don't have a phone number for you, I am so sorry. Please call me at 704-706-7037 and we can set up a time to meet and talk so that you are able to get the support you need.

Request for ICAN Meeting on Saturday

One of our own had her second cesarean on Monday and is in the hospital with a baby who spent a few days in the NICU and is now on the pediatric floor. Her family can really use our support right now. If you're able, please bring a dish or food of some kind that can be frozen and reheated to donate to the family (along with instructions on how to heat it, if applicable). We are trying to help them out a bit so that they don't have to think about meals in the midst of all of this.

It is my pleasure to announce the results of today's ICAN of Charlotte elections. Votes were unanimous and there were no offices for which more than one person was running, so that made the election rather easy.

Two offices were filled when our group started. I am the Chapter Leader. Angela Hathaway, who started the chapter with me, is the Secretary. The offices that were open are now filled as follows:

Saturday's Meeting Location....Need Help!

I just got word from Angela that Chickenpox is going around her house and the meeting was scheduled to take place at her home in south Charlotte this weekend. I need a volunteer on the south side of Charlotte and the surrounding areas who would be willing to host the meeting at their home. If I don't get any volunteers by this time tomorrow I will go ahead and schedule it for my house (north of Charlotte), but for fairness sake, it would be nice if we could find someone on the south side. *VBAC SUPPORT MEETING*

MEETING CANCELLED!!!

Tomorrow's meeting (9/27) on VBAC has been cancelled due to the gas situation. I am so sorry for the short notice. The gas situation seems to be keeping most people, including the speaker, stranded without a way to get here. Many people have contacted me saying that they have been unable to find gas and are afraid to use what little they have to come to the meeting. We have decided that the prudent thing to do in this situation is to cancel the meeting for tomorrow.

Please join us next month on October 25th at 10 a.m. at Angela Hathaway's house for a support meeting on VBAC. This will be a support meeting and not a speaker meeting but good information on VBAC will be available from the women in attendance as well as from handouts and information sheets. Much support will be available, and will especially pertain to those of you who are planning for a VBAC or who may be working with clients who are preparing for a VBAC.

The deadline for nominating someone or volunteering for an ICAN office has also been moved to October 25th to give people a little more time given the circumstances.

Subscription Info

This is in response to some questions about subscriptions. ICAN subscriptions are available at http://www.icanofcharlotte.mybisi.com .

Subscriptions start at $10.The various subscription levels and their prices are explained in further detail at our online store. Remember that you can always receive support regardless of whether or not you are a subscribing member. Support is always free.

Subscribing allows you to serve in a position within ICAN (elections are coming up) and gives our chapter funding that allows us to have reach in the community. This funding will be used for meeting materials, flyers, brochures, group activities, quarterly cesarean prevention classes, movie screenings, seminars, and other community outreach activities. Our chapter keeps 30% of all subscription fees and the remaining 70% is sent to international.

Donations, apart from subscription fees, may be sent toicanofcharlotte@gmail.com .

Volunteer for or nominate someone else for a position serving within the Charlotte Chapter of ICAN! Elections are coming up soon on November 15th, immediately following our meeting. To serve ICAN, the only requirements are to be a subscribing member (subscriptions start at just $10) and to have a desire to help others. Please volunteer or nominate someone else by October 15th. This will give our members a chance to get to know you before November’s elections. Remember that we're all new, so don't let being new deter you from getting involved. If you need to purchase a subscription you can do so at http://www.icanofcharlotte.mybisi.com . Open positions are as follows:

Treasurer: Maintains and balances the bank account, makes deposits & writes approved checks, keeps a journal of debits & credits, keeps a separate journal for events, Provides monthly: balance, list of expenditures, subscription income & donations; collects subscription dues and keeps subscription records, coordinates fundraisers and solicits donations, completes Six Month Financial Report for the national treasurer twice a year, and provides chapter with a yearly budget.

Librarian: Develops and maintains a collection of books, magazines, articles and videotapes on cesarean prevention and birth related issues; keeps an inventory of all materials, suggests books for purchase and orders books approved by officers, follows up on overdue books, brings the library to open meetings and makes the library available to subscribers, prepares a cost inventory of books and materials every six months for the treasurer.

Newsletter Editor: Arranges for printing and mailing of a quarterly newsletter, writes or solicits articles such as birth stories, book reviews, or letters; researches previously published articles for inclusion and procures permission for reprinting, solicits underwriters or advertisers to cover the cost of production.

Publicity Coordinator: Contacts the media (newspapers, TV, radio) for coverage of events, solicits a local celebrity for support and use of their name, keeps current in birth field coverage and responds to coverage, keeps an up-to-date list of local newspapers for releases, writes releases or PSA’s as needed, keeps a record of PSAs and media coverage, oversees the dissemination of press releases from ICAN’s publicity director.

Fundraising Coordinator: Initiates fundraising ideas, organizes fundraising events with approval from officers, solicits donations, initiates and writes proposals for grant funding.
Subscription Coordinator: Solicits new & renewal subscriptions, sends subscription solicitation letters to approved solicitation lists, sends renewal letters for subscriptions about to expire.

This meeting is going to be a "support" meeting, meaning it is intended for those who are affected by cesarean or other traumatic birth experiences. Children (especially nursing children) are always welcome, though childcare is not provided.

Online Subscription Purchasing Now Available!

Greetings Everyone,

I'm happy to let you know that since I've gotten our PayPal account up and running, ICAN subscriptions are now available for purchase online.

Our current web server wanted me to upgrade our account in order to place PayPal buttons, so I've opened a free online store for us at http://icanofcharlotte.mybisi.com

Subscriptions will help our group to have a presence in Charlotte. Our group keeps 30% of the subscription fees and the rest is forwarded to International.

Our group would like to offer quarterly cesarean prevention classes and expand our community outreach efforts. We are also committed to paying our table and advertisement feels for BOLD. Those run $75 and we have already received a donation for $25, so we only need to come up with the remaining $50. Subscription fees help our group to cover our group expenses, such as these.

In addition, sometime between now and the end of the year, I would like to hold elections for group positions such as Treasurer, Web manager, media relations, publicity, etc. Those interested in group positions must be subscribing members of ICAN.

Please, please keep in mind that support is available to ALL, regardless of whether or not you can afford to be a subscriber. Anyone, subscriber or not, is welcome to attend meetings for information and support.

Announcing the Birth of ICAN of Charlotte!

What:
Starting July 26th, new hope, understanding, support, and education are coming to Charlotte families struggling with a locally challenging birth climate and traumatic birth experiences.

1 in 3 women give birth via cesarean section and this rate is rising. 1 in 20 women experience traumatic stress following birth. Rates of Post Partum Depression (PPD) are on the rise. Women's options in birth are increasingly limited, especially in the Charlotte area where it is rumored that some local hospitals are looking to impose limitations on Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). National tension adds to this, with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) resolution to make homebirth illegal for birthing mothers.

Where are mothers and their families to turn for support in an era where their pain is largely unseen, their options limited, and in a time where birthing mothers may even be made out to be criminals?Where are women to turn when they are looking to prevent a cesarean in the first place?

With the introduction of ICAN of Charlotte, a chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc., whose mission is to "improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)," women and families in the Charlotte area who have previously felt isolated can rejoice in being heard, supported, and educated.

ICAN is the only organization aimed at providing support and education to those who have experienced cesarean section and other traumatic births, those who often suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Post Partum Depression leaving them with many difficult feelings at a time when they expected to be feeling joyous upon the arrival of a new baby. ICAN support meetings offer understanding and validation of feelings and experiences related to traumatic birth,tools for healing and moving forward, as well as support in planning a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).

ICAN also offers educational information related to cesarean prevention. Expecting mothers and families interested in preventing the first cesarean can learn more and find support at informational ICAN meetings and special events. At many of these meetings and events, special speakers are invited such as midwives, doulas, physicians, natural health practitioners, and psychologists.

Meetings, alternating between support and community informational meetings on relevant topics, will be offered once a month. Workshops, a lending library, cesarean prevention classes, and more will also be offered in the future.
